Oppo A77 5G Review: Innovation Meets Mid-Range Affordability

Robert Cerff / 14-10-2022 / Tech

Oppo recently released the powerful mid-range Oppo A77 5G in South Africa.

Under its slim, ergonomic, and lightweight design this device is a versatile smartphone that houses some pretty impressive specs.

But do these specs deliver a solid performance? Here’s our review of the Oppo A77 5G to help you decide.

Colour Rich Display

The Colour Rich LCD on the Oppo A77 5G is vibrant and accurate, boasting a large 6.56-inch screen and an immersive 89.8% screen-to-body ratio. The only downside is the 720p screen resolution, but the device makes up for this with a high 90Hz refresh rate, which can be lowered to 60Hz to conserve battery life. It offers a smooth, responsive visual experience, ideal for watching videos and streaming in full resolution. This is further enhanced by a pair of Ultra Linear Stereo speakers for a surround sound audio experience.

AI Boosted Camera

The Oppo A77 features a dual camera setup on the back with a 48MP main shooter and a 2MP depth camera. Even though a wide-angle lens is excluded, the camera offers excellent photo quality in different lighting conditions. It's further boosted by interesting AI technology, headlined by a 108MP Ultra Clear Image feature that reconstructs pictures and improves pixels using an advanced algorithm for striking true-to-life imagery. On the front is an 8MP snapper that features AI Portrait Retouching for high-quality selfies.

RAM Expansion Tech

This device follows the highly successful Oppo A57 and features the latest Android 12 with ColorOS 12.1.

Oppo A77 5G is powered by the efficient and high-performance MediaTek Dimensity 810, a mid-range chipset that delivers even on demanding platforms. Sporting cutting-edge 6nm process technology, it meets all your daily needs while boasting excellent power-efficiency. It comes complete with 128GB internal storage and 6GB RAM with RAM expansion technology made possible by ColorOS. The technology essentially “borrows” space from the free internal storage space of up to 11GB for a smoother mobile experience. It allows more apps and games to run in the background, allowing users to switch between many tasks for hassle-free multitasking.

Power-Efficient Battery Goes Further

Under the hood is a big, long-lasting 5000mAh battery with 33W SUPERVOOC fast-charging capabilities. It can last all day with regular use performing various tasks such as answering phone calls, replying to emails, scrolling social media, and occasionally playing games. The phone juices up from 0% to 100% in just over an hour, and various power-saving modes ensure the battery lasts longer. Oppo claims you can use WhatsApp for 1.2 hours on 5% battery life, making it ideal in situations when the battery is running low with no power source nearby.

Verdict

The Oppo A77 5G is a capable mid-range workhorse that performs everyday tasks seamlessly and without any lags. The highlights are the immersive screen with a high refresh rate, good camera quality enhanced by AI technology, innovative RAM expansion technology, and a beefy battery that charges quickly and goes the distance on minimal juice.

Oppo Smartphones Arrive in South Africa!

If you’ve ever watched international sporting events, you would have come across the name Oppo before. Now, South Africans will get a chance to know the brand much better as the smartphone manufacturer from China has decided to expand into Africa, with three new smartphones ready to enter the local market. Since their establishment in 2004, Oppo is now in 40 different countries and regions around the world. They’ve employed around 40,000 people and invested over $1.4 billion to create innovative smartphones. Presently, over 300 million people own an Oppo device and now they’ve decided to bring it to Mzansi. This is exactly what South Africans needed, especially considering the hold that Samsung, Apple and Huawei have had in the market. Oppo is the fifth-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world and the third largest in China. The company plans to launch three mid-range devices this year and flagship options in the first half of 2021. In a statement, Oppo said they were going to offer “the best blend of premium features, such as large main camera sensors; big, crisp displays; and long-lasting, fast-charging batteries, but at an affordable price”. Oppo A72 The initial three mid-tier devices from Oppo are the A15, A53S and the A72 . As with the Samsung Galaxy range, the higher the number, the higher the model on the smartphone tier. The Oppo A72 is at the high-end of those three models with a Snapdragon 665 chipset along with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It sports a 6.5-inch LCD screen and a whopping 5,000mAh battery that supports fast charging. That’s great value for a mid-tier device. In terms of the cameras, you can expect four cameras at the back, including a 48MP, 8MP and two 2MP sensors with a front-facing 16MP camera. Oppo A53S The A53S has a Snapdragon 460 chipset with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. You will get the same battery as the A72 but the display resolution decreases to 720x1600. The selfie camera is the same, but it houses three rear cameras - 13MP and two sets of 2MP lenses. Oppo A15 The lower mid-range option is the A15 which there isn’t much information about from the company. However, we do know that it has a 6.5-inch HD+ display with a 4,230mAh battery. Oppo hasn’t confirmed exactly when the devices will be available nor have they released the prices. Either way, competition is always great, especially for the consumer, and we welcome Oppo’s entrance into the South African market.
