Huawei nova Y90 Review: Simplicity Meets Power
Robert Cerff / 10-10-2022 / Tech
In June, Huawei launched the nova Y90 and provided yet another affordable smartphone in a market spoilt for choice. With a prepaid price tag just below R6000, does it hold up against other mid-range phones in this price bracket? We’re here to answer this with our review on the Huawei nova Y9, so you can decide if this smartphone is for you.
Almost bezel-less display
Sporting an immersive 6.7-inch FHD+ IPS display, the Huawei nova Y90 offers a near bezel-less experience and bright, well-produced colours with good contrast and sharpness. At an easy to hold 200-gram weight, you can enjoy a smooth user experience thanks to a decent mid-range refresh rate of 90Hz. Although it isn’t as speedy as the industry benchmark of 120Hz, it does come in much higher than 60Hz, which can be found in a range of other smartphones in this price range.
Camera with energy
The camera module on the Huawei nova Y90 looks very similar to the premium Huawei Mate 40. It boasts an impressive 50MP main camera supported by a macro and depth sensor duo at 2MPs each. Besides its good looks, it also delivers decent performance that captures high-quality photos with a balance of colour, brightness, sharpness, contrast and dynamic range. The main camera is the star, especially during the day when sufficient light enters the sensors. However, it does tend to struggle slightly in low-light conditions. But with that said, the nova Y90 is great as an everyday camera for capturing special moments and sharing it on social media platforms. On the front is a capable 8MP selfie snapper, and for recording videos, you get a Full HD experience at 30fps.
Keeping it snappy
Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 680 chip and paired with 8GB RAM and 128GB internal storage, the Huawei nova Y90 is a mid-range superstar. Although there’s no expandable storage, you get plenty of system memory to store apps and media files. The processing power is also impressive, as it can handle multitasking and most mobile games without slowing down. However, it does struggle a bit with processing resource-heavy games like Genshin Impact and Asphalt 9, but this is unsurprising for a mid-range device. When handling everyday tasks, the nova Y90 is snappy without any lags.
A beastly battery
Under the hood, the Huawei nova Y90 packs a beast of a battery. At 5000 mAh, it can easily last up to a day with regular use. If you’re super conservative, you can get two days from just one full charge. Although there’s no wireless charging, a 40W Huawei SuperCharge charger juices up the phone from zero to a 100 in about an hour.
Huawei Mobile Services get better and better
Huawei has tried to adapt to a Google-less mobile experience after its ban in 2019. Since then, it has made major leaps towards providing a full suite of mobile services that aren’t reliant on Google. After three years, Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) now offers over 40 000 apps on the AppGallery with big improvements to the overall user experience. So, if you can do without core Google mobile services, the Huawei nova Y90 paired with HMS offers everything you need in a smartphone without making you feel like you’re missing out.
Verdict
If you’re looking for an affordable phone that’s a real mid-range competitor, the Huawei nova Y90 is one the best. You get an immersive display, a powerful battery, fluid processing speeds, and a comprehensive mobile experience. It’s an everyday device that gives you everything you need without the high price tag.
